What is Cover Tape?

Cover tape is a type of adhesive tape that is commonly used in the packaging of electronic components, such as integrated circuits (ICs), surface-mounted devices

(SMDs), and other similar components. It is typically made from a thin layer of plastic film, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and features a pressure or heat sensitive adhesive on one side.

Why use Cover Tape?

The primary purpose of cover tape is to protect the delicate electronic components from dust, moisture, and other contaminants during storage and transportation. It is often used in conjunction with a carrier tape, which is a thin, plastic film that holds the electronic components in place.

How is Cover Tape used?

The cover tape is applied to the top of the carrier tape, covering the components and providing a secure seal to prevent them from falling out. When the components are ready to be used, the cover tape can be easily peeled off to expose the components.

In addition to its protective function, cover tape may also include features such as antistatic properties to prevent damage to sensitive electronic components from electrostatic discharge (ESD), or perforations to facilitate easy separation of the cover tape from the carrier tape.

Overall

Cover tape is an essential component in the packaging and protection of electronic components, ensuring their safe handling and use.
